Overview

Coiled-coil domain-containing protein 141 (CCDC141) is a structural protein implicated in brain development, notably in the migration of specific neuronal populations such as gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons and cortical neurons[1][2][3]. It accumulates at the centrosome during cell migration, where it stabilizes and positions the centrosome—a crucial step for effective cell movement. CCDC141 enhances the acetylation of α-tubulin by inhibiting the deacetylase HDAC6, thereby facilitating proper centrosome function and efficient neuronal migration[1][2]. Genetic mutations in CCDC141 cause defects in neuronal migration and are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders such as Kallmann syndrome, idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, and self-limited delayed puberty[1][2]. It is not classified as a classic therapeutic drug target such as an enzyme, receptor, or transporter; instead, it is best characterized as a structural or regulatory cytoskeletal protein[1][2][3][4]. No drugs are known to target CCDC141, and there are currently no established biomarkers or safety concerns specific to this protein.
