Overview

Coiled-coil domain-containing protein 158 (CCDC158) is a member of the coiled-coil domain-containing protein family, encoded by the CCDC158 gene. It is expressed in human kidney tubules and the testis, and has been identified as a potential regulator in renal proximal tubular endocytosis. A variant in CCDC158 was found in a family with proximal tubular dysfunction (manifesting clinically as proteinuria and nephrocalcinosis) and oligospermia, supporting a possible role in receptor-mediated endocytosis by interacting with other endocytosis-related proteins. Experimental evidence suggests CCDC158 is involved in cellular processes related to the uptake and trafficking of proteins and peptides within proximal tubular epithelial cells. The full cellular and physiological role is still being elucidated; there are currently no known direct drug interactions, established disease biomarkers, or specific safety concerns related to therapeutic targeting, and it is not recognized as a therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter.
