Overview

Coiled-coil domain-containing protein 183 (CCDC183) is a protein encoded by the CCDC183 gene, primarily expressed in the testis and specifically in developing spermatids during spermiogenesis[2][7][4]. It is essential for the formation of the cytoplasmic invagination surrounding the sperm flagellum, which enables proper compartmentalization and function of spermatozoa. Knockout studies in mice demonstrate that loss of CCDC183 results in defective sperm tail formation, abnormal sperm morphology, poor motility, and consequently, male infertility. This protein appears to operate primarily in a structural/organizational capacity during late stages of sperm cell development. While the complete molecular mechanisms are not fully elucidated due to the lack of suitable antibodies and detailed interactome data, its critical role in spermatogenesis is clear[2][3]. There are currently no known drugs or therapeutic agents targeting this protein, and it is not categorized as a classical receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor.
