Overview

Coiled-coil domain-containing protein 61 (CCDC61) is a centrosomal and microtubule-associated protein implicated in centriole assembly, spindle assembly, and the organization of centriolar substructures. CCDC61 is a structural paralog of SAS6, a crucial centriole scaffold, but unlike SAS6, forms linear filaments through its coiled-coil domains. It participates in the recruitment and anchoring of proteins such as Cep170 at the centrosome, and is essential for correct spindle organization and chromatin alignment during mitosis[1][2][3][4]. CCDC61 functions at centriolar satellites and basal bodies, supporting microtubule stability and potentially facilitating ciliary and mitotic events, although it is considered non-essential for ciliogenesis[3][4]. Although CCDC61 has established roles in basic cell biological processes, it is not currently recognized as a direct therapeutic target, nor are any drugs known to interact with this protein.
