Target intelligence / Profile preview
Coiled-coil domain-containing protein 81 (CCDC81) is a centrosome-associated protein that plays a crucial role in ciliogenesis and cell division[2][3]. The protein is localized to the centrosome through its amino acids 301-505 and is highly conserved among mammals, indicating its important biological function[2]. CCDC81 is essential for the formation of primary cilia, as silencing of the protein results in decreased frequency and length of primary cilia, though it does not significantly affect centriole number[2]. The protein shows elevated expression in tissues rich in motile cilia, including testis, lung, trachea, and fallopian tubes, suggesting it also plays a role in motile cilia function[2]. CCDC81 functions as part of the centrosome's microtubule-organizing center, which is essential for mitosis and assembling various types of cilia[2]. The protein contains coiled-coil domains, which are structural motifs found in proteins throughout all kingdoms of life and can function as molecular spacers, rulers, or scaffolds[1]. While CCDC81 knockout mice show no significant abnormalities in body weight over a six-week period, the protein's role in ciliogenesis makes it important for proper cellular function[2].
