Coiled-coil domain-containing protein 87 (CCDC87) is a protein expressed predominantly in the testis, with a crucial function in spermatogenesis and sperm head formation[4][5][6]. CCDC87 is required for the acrosome reaction – a calcium-dependent exocytosis event in sperm necessary for fertilization – and thus is essential for normal male fertility[2][4][5][6]. Mutations or disruption of CCDC87 lead to abnormalities in sperm morphology, impaired motility, defects in the acrosome reaction, and decreased fertilizing capacity, highlighting its importance in reproductive biology[4][6]. Diseases associated include male infertility phenotypes such as abnormal sperm parameters, but CCDC87 has not been linked to broader pathologies or clinical drug targeting[2][4][6]. Molecularly, CCDC87 contains a coiled-coil domain, a structural motif facilitating protein interactions and possibly microtubule binding involved in sperm function[2][5]. There is no evidence that CCDC87 acts as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, nor has any drug been developed to target it.
