Target intelligence / Profile preview
**Coiled-coil domain-containing protein 89 (CCDC89)** is a protein encoded by the CCDC89 gene, predicted to be located in the **cytoplasm and nucleus**[1][5]. It is a member of the broad family of coiled-coil domain-containing proteins, which are often structural proteins mediating protein-protein interactions. CCDC89 is known to interact with the Orange domain of basic helix–loop–helix (bHLH) transcription factors, such as those in the HRT/Hey family, and is alternatively named **Bc8 orange-interacting protein (BOIP)**[2][4]. Recent research has identified that CCDC89 is essential for optimal sperm tail motility and male fertility in mammals, with both mouse knockout and human variant data suggesting a causal role for CCDC89 in proper sperm function and spermatogenesis[3]. CCDC89 gene mutations are associated with impaired sperm motility, subfertility, and may serve as a genetic risk factor for human male infertility. There is emerging evidence of recurrent CCDC89 mutations in certain tumors, including carotid paragangliomas, supporting a possible role in tumorigenesis, although its detailed molecular mechanisms remain incompletely clarified[1][3]. There are no publications associating CCDC89 directly with any approved or investigational drugs, nor documented safety concerns; it is not currently regarded as a classic therapeutic target (such as a receptor, enzyme, ion channel, or transporter)[5][7][8].
