Overview

Coilin pseudogene 1 (COILP1) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome, related to the coilin (COIL) gene, which encodes the marker protein for Cajal bodies—nuclear subdomains involved in the biogenesis of snRNPs and scaRNPs essential for pre-mRNA splicing. While pseudogenes usually do not produce functional proteins, evidence shows that COILP1 can be transcribed and may encode a truncated protein (coilp1, ~203 amino acids) that shares sequence similarity with a segment of coilin and can bind certain small Cajal body RNAs and telomerase RNA. However, coilp1 protein differs from coilin in subcellular localization and stability, and its precise cellular function remains to be fully elucidated. There is currently little evidence that COILP1 plays a direct or major role in disease pathogenesis or is targeted by any drugs.
