COL4A2 antisense RNA 1 (COL4A2-AS1) is a human long non-coding RNA located on chromosome 13, transcribed antisense to the COL4A2 coding gene[1][3]. COL4A2-AS1 is not a protein-coding gene and has no receptor/enzyme/transporter activity. It is highly expressed in several tissues including the brain, heart, and kidneys. Functionally, COL4A2-AS1 is involved in the regulation of COL4A2 (which encodes the type IV collagen alpha 2 chain), likely by acting as a molecular sponge for microRNAs such as miR-20b-5p, modulating downstream targets such as HIF1A[1][2]. Experimental evidence, particularly in colorectal cancer, shows that COL4A2-AS1 can promote cell proliferation and aerobic glycolysis, while inhibiting this lncRNA increases apoptosis and reduces glycolysis in cancer cells[2]. Its exact mechanisms and broader physiological and pathological roles are still under investigation. There are currently no known drugs targeting COL4A2-AS1, and its use as a biomarker or therapeutic target remains largely experimental.
