Overview

COL5A1 antisense RNA 1 (COL5A1-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA produced from the human genome on chromosome 9, transcribed from a region antisense to the protein-coding COL5A1 gene. Unlike COL5A1, which encodes the collagen type V alpha 1 chain, COL5A1-AS1 is itself non-protein-coding and belongs to the lncRNA molecular class. The precise biological role of COL5A1-AS1 is not well defined, but it may be involved in the regulation of gene expression, possibly influencing COL5A1 function by antisense mechanisms. Some database evidence links COL5A1-AS1 to classic Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome as a possible genetic marker, although evidence for a direct functional or pathogenic role remains limited. There are currently no drugs known to target COL5A1-AS1, and it is not established as a therapeutic target in clinical use[5][11][1]. Key points: - COL5A1-AS1 is an lncRNA, not a protein; many aliases and entries mistakenly imply protein-coding status. - No validated direct biological functions or disease mechanisms beyond possible gene regulation relationships. - Not considered a therapeutic, receptor, or conventional pharmacological target.
