Overview

Coliform bacteria represent a broad functional group of Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacteria characterized by their ability to ferment lactose with the production of acid and gas (Source: EPA). This group encompasses several genera within the Enterobacteriaceae family, including Escherichia, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, and Citrobacter (Source: StatPearls). While many coliforms are commensal organisms inhabiting the gastrointestinal tracts of humans and animals, their presence in environmental samples is a primary indicator of fecal contamination and the potential presence of enteric pathogens (Source: WHO). In clinical settings, pathogenic strains of coliforms are major causes of community-acquired and nosocomial infections, such as urinary tract infections, neonatal meningitis, and sepsis (Source: NIH).
