Colitis associated IRF1 antisense regulator of intestinal homeostasis (CARINH) is a long non-coding RNA located adjacent to the IRF1 gene. CARINH is essential for maintaining gut immune homeostasis and protecting against colitis by forming a feedforward regulatory loop with IRF1 in myeloid cells. This loop, activated by microbial factors, regulates anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial programs in the intestine. Genetic variants affecting CARINH expression modulate susceptibility to inflammatory bowel disease. CARINH is not a protein, enzyme, receptor, or transporter, and currently has no direct therapeutic agents or clinical interventions targeting it
