Target intelligence / Profile preview
Collagen type III is a fibrillar collagen and a major structural protein in the extracellular matrix of various tissues, particularly in extensible connective tissues like blood vessels, uterus, bowel, and skin. It provides tensile strength and structural support, regulates type I collagen fibril diameter, and plays a role in wound healing and hemostasis. Mutations in the COL3A1 gene, which encodes the alpha-1(III) chain of collagen type III, cause vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS), a life-threatening condition characterized by fragile blood vessels prone to rupture.
