Collagen biosynthesis refers to the multi-step cellular process by which collagen, the most abundant structural protein in animals, is produced and assembled. This process is essential for maintaining the integrity and function of connective tissues such as skin, bone, cartilage, tendons, and blood vessels. The process involves gene transcription, translation, post-translational modifications (hydroxylation and glycosylation), procollagen formation, transport and secretion, and extracellular processing to form mature collagen fibers. Defects in any step can result in connective tissue disorders.
