Collagen cross-linking is a critical molecular process underpinning tissue stability across many organs. It can be harnessed therapeutically—most notably via riboflavin/UVA-induced photochemical reactions—to treat diseases marked by weakened connective tissue architecture such as keratoconus. The process involves both natural enzymatic mechanisms mediated mainly by lysyl oxidase as well as artificial induction using photosensitizers under controlled conditions.
