Overview
Collagen production is the complex, multi-step biological process by which cells synthesize collagen, the most abundant structural protein in animals. Collagen is essential for providing strength and structure to connective tissues such as skin, bone, tendons, cartilage, and blood vessels. The process involves intracellular steps (transcription, translation, post-translational modifications, transport) and extracellular steps (cleavage and fibril formation), and is regulated by factors such as Vitamin C, zinc, copper and glucocorticoids. There are at least 28 types of collagens, and disorders affecting collagen synthesis can result in connective tissue diseases or impaired wound healing.
