Collagen protein synthesis in synovial cells is a critical biological process that maintains the structural integrity and function of synovial tissue, which lines joints. The primary cell type responsible for collagen production in the synovium is the fibroblast-like synoviocyte (FLS). These cells synthesize various types of collagen, contributing to both normal joint homeostasis and pathological conditions such as osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In diseases like OA, there is an imbalance between synthesis and degradation leading to fibrosis. In RA, inflammatory mediators stimulate FLSs to produce more matrix-degrading enzymes, altering the normal ECM composition.
