Overview

Collagen is a family of structural proteins characterized by their unique triple-helical conformation formed from three polypeptide chains rich in glycine/proline/hydroxyproline. It is the most abundant protein in animals and plays an essential role across all multicellular organisms by maintaining tissue architecture/mechanical stability while enabling dynamic biological processes such as growth/healing/adaptation throughout life. There are at least 29 different types of collagen identified so far, each having a specialized role in different tissues.
