Collagen type VI alpha 5 chain (COL6A5)

Target
COL6A5
Molecular classification
Collagen superfamily, Extracellular matrix protein, von Willebrand factor A domain-containing protein
01

Overview

Collagen type VI alpha 5 chain (COL6A5) is a large extracellular matrix glycoprotein involved in the supramolecular assembly of collagen VI microfilaments, which provide mechanical strength and cytoprotective functions to multiple tissues, including muscle, skin, lung, testis, colon, and small intestine. The COL6A5 gene encodes a protein with multiple von Willebrand factor A-like domains, facilitating interactions with other matrix components and helping organize tissue architecture. Mutations and altered expression are linked to diseases such as muscular dystrophy and eczema. COL6A5 is primarily a structural and regulatory ECM molecule and is not currently regarded as a direct drug target or biomarker in clinical pharmacology.
