Overview
Collagen type VII alpha 1 chain is a protein encoded by the COL7A1 gene in humans. It is a critical component of type VII collagen, which forms anchoring fibrils beneath stratified squamous epithelial basement membranes, connecting the epidermal basement membrane to the underlying dermis. It is crucial for dermal–epidermal adhesion, wound healing, and skin remodeling processes. Mutations in COL7A1 cause dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, and autoimmune responses against type VII collagen cause epidermolysis bullosa acquisita.
