Collagen type XVI alpha 1 chain (COL16A1)

Target
COL16A1
Molecular classification
Fibril-associated collagen with interrupted helices (FACIT family), Extracellular matrix protein
01

Overview

Collagen type XVI alpha 1 chain is an extracellular matrix protein and member of the FACIT collagen family. These proteins associate with fibril-forming collagens and contribute to the integrity and organization of the extracellular matrix, especially in tissues such as skin, cartilage, fibroblasts, keratinocytes, smooth muscle, and amnion[1][5]. Collagen XVI mediates integrin-based cell adhesion, participates in cell spreading and shape changes, and is involved in assembly of focal adhesions[5][6][9]. It forms homotrimers and interacts with structural proteins like fibrillin-1 and fibronectin, integrating into specialized microfibrils and cartilage fibrils[3]. The NC11 domain may serve as a biomarker in oral squamous cell carcinoma, but the protein itself is not a known drug target or common receptor, enzyme, or transporter implicated in direct therapeutic strategies[7].
