Overview

Collagen type XXIII alpha 1 chain (COL23A1) is a type II transmembrane protein and member of the nonfibrillar transmembranous collagen family[1][4]. It is encoded by the COL23A1 gene and is structurally related to collagens XIII and XXV. COL23A1 is found in both membrane-bound and shed (soluble) forms, the latter produced by proteolytic cleavage via furin protease[6]. Expression occurs in several adult and developing tissues, including epidermis, tongue, gut, lung, brain, kidney, and cornea[1]. COL23A1 is implicated in cell adhesion, primarily through interaction with integrin α2β1, and has been associated with tumor growth, survival, and metastasis in cancers such as non-small cell lung carcinoma and prostate cancer, where it may serve as a useful biomarker for detection and monitoring[1][4][6]. While fundamental biological functions continue to be characterized, its activities parallel those of other transmembrane collagen family members[1][4].
