Collagen type XXVI alpha 1 chain is a fibrillar collagen component belonging to the collagen superfamily of extracellular matrix (ECM) structural proteins. It is encoded by the COL26A1 gene and forms homotrimers that contribute to tissue structural integrity. Expression studies in mouse development demonstrate localization in somites, mesenchymal tissues of the head, and branchial arches during embryogenesis, suggesting a role in early tissue organization. Unlike many other collagen types, type XXVI has not been directly linked to common connective tissue disorders, nor is it recognized as a therapeutic target for drugs or disease biomarker in current biomedical literature.
