Overview

Collector channels are a network of approximately 25-35 small vessels that connect Schlemm's canal to the episcleral venous system in the human eye, serving as the primary pathway for aqueous humor drainage after filtration through the trabecular meshwork and juxtacanalicular tissue.[4][6][7][8] These channels exhibit anatomical variation in orifice size and number, with tubule-like structures observed that facilitate transport of fluid, pigment, and blood cells.[7] Dysfunction or obstruction in collector channels contributes to impaired outflow facility, elevating intraocular pressure—a key risk factor in primary open-angle glaucoma.[2][10] Transcriptomic studies identify distinct endothelial cell populations in collector channels, marked by genes like Ackr1, distinguishing them from inner/outer wall Schlemm's canal cells and showing lymphatic-like properties in some subsets.[2] No drugs directly target collector channels as a molecular entity; therapeutic strategies focus upstream on trabecular meshwork or canal dynamics to enhance overall outflow.[10] Their endothelial cells express markers like Selp and Flt1, supporting roles in immune modulation and vascular permeability within the iridocorneal angle.[2]
