Colloid osmotic pressure maintenance

Overview

Colloid osmotic pressure maintenance refers to the process by which the concentration of plasma proteins, primarily albumin, creates an osmotic force (oncotic pressure) within the vascular system that resists the outward flow of fluid from capillaries into interstitial tissues[1][2][5]. This pressure is essential for the reabsorption of water at the venous end of capillaries, counterbalancing hydrostatic pressure and thus maintaining appropriate circulating blood volume and tissue hydration. Abnormalities in colloid osmotic pressure, due to changes in plasma protein levels, can result in clinical conditions such as edema and hypovolemia[1][2][5]. This is a physiological phenomenon, not a discrete drug target or molecular entity.
