Colon lumen osmolality refers to the concentration of solutes, such as electrolytes, glucose, and other small molecules, in the fluid inside the colon. This property profoundly affects water movement, epithelial integrity, and the absorption or secretion of fluids and minerals in the large intestine. Abnormal luminal osmolality is relevant in clinical settings, especially in conditions that cause diarrhea or dehydration, or during administration of osmotic laxatives. Although not a discrete molecular entity, altered osmolality can impact colonocyte metabolism, epithelial barrier function, and potentially promote inflammation or injury if extremes are reached.
