The "colon lumen osmotic gradient" refers to the difference in osmolarity (solute concentration) between the contents of the colon lumen and surrounding tissues or blood. This gradient is a key physiological driver for water movement across the colonic epithelium, enabling both absorption and secretion of water in response to bodily needs. Water movement in the colon is primarily governed by osmosis, which depends on established osmotic gradients created by active transport of electrolytes—mainly sodium ions (Na+). Disruption of mucosal integrity or electrolyte transport impairs this function, leading to altered stool consistency or diarrhea.
