A colonocyte is the predominant epithelial cell type of the large intestine, essential for maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance. These cells facilitate the absorption of water and salts and are the primary site for the uptake of short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which provides the majority of their energy (StatPearls, 2023). Colonocytes constitute a physical and biochemical barrier, secreting mucins and forming tight junctions to sequester the gut microbiota (NCBI, 2022). Pathologically, colonocytes are central to the development of inflammatory bowel diseases and are the cells from which colorectal carcinomas arise (PubMed, 2021). While colonocytes express numerous proteins that serve as drug targets, such as ion channels and cytokine receptors, the term "colonocyte" refers to a whole cell type rather than a discrete molecular target (Wikipedia, 2024). Consequently, it is not classified as a therapeutic target in the context of molecular pharmacology.
