Colonic microbiota fermentation refers to the anaerobic microbial breakdown of non-digestible dietary fibers, proteins, and other substrates in the colon, resulting in the formation of numerous metabolites, chiefly short-chain fatty acids (such as acetate, propionate, and butyrate), vitamins, and gases. This process is essential for host health, supporting the energy needs of colonic epithelial cells, regulating immune function, and helping protect against pathogens. However, dysregulation or imbalance in fermentation products can contribute to diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer, and metabolic disorders.
