Overview

Colonic mucosal epithelial cells are the primary cellular component lining the inner surface of the colon’s mucosa. This single layer includes several specialized subtypes such as absorptive colonocytes, mucus-secreting goblet cells, enteroendocrine cells, tuft cells, and M-cells. Together they form a critical barrier that separates luminal contents from underlying tissues while allowing selective absorption of water and electrolytes. These cells secrete mucus to protect against mechanical damage and pathogens while also participating in immune surveillance by interacting with antigens from gut microbiota. The integrity of this epithelium is maintained by tight junctions between adjacent cells.
