Colonic mucosal tissue is the innermost layer of the large intestine, comprising a simple columnar epithelium, the lamina propria, and the muscularis mucosae (StatPearls, 2023). It functions as a vital physiological barrier that regulates the absorption of water and electrolytes while preventing the translocation of commensal bacteria and pathogens into the systemic circulation (NCBI, 2022). The tissue contains specialized cell types, including goblet cells that secrete a protective mucus layer and enteroendocrine cells that regulate gut motility and signaling. In diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, the colonic mucosa becomes the primary site of chronic inflammation, characterized by epithelial erosion and immune cell infiltration (NIH, 2023). While numerous drugs like aminosalicylates and monoclonal antibodies are administered to treat these conditions by acting on specific pathways within the mucosa, the tissue itself is a complex biological environment rather than a discrete molecular target.
