Overview

Colonic peristalsis refers to the wave-like, coordinated contractions of smooth muscle in the colon (large intestine) that propel intestinal contents forward. These movements are essential for mixing, storing, and slowly transporting fecal material through the colon, as well as for facilitating rapid evacuation when necessary. In addition to moving waste toward the rectum for excretion, colonic peristalsis aids in water absorption from undigested food and helps control bacterial growth by mechanically clearing potential colonies.
