Colonization Factor Antigen II Fimbriae (CFA/II)

Target
CFA/II
Molecular classification
Bacterial adhesin, Fimbria, Class 5 fimbriae
01

Overview

Colonization factor antigen II (CFA/II) fimbriae are surface-exposed, proteinaceous appendages produced by certain strains of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). These fimbriae mediate bacterial adhesion to host intestinal epithelial cells, essential for colonization and diarrheal disease. Consisting of polymerized major subunits and minor adhesive tip subunits, they are highly immunogenic and serve as a target for anti-adhesion therapies and vaccine development, particularly focusing on the minor adhesive subunits.

Mechanism of action

Anti-fimbrial antibodies can inhibit adhesion by compromising the mechanical resilience of the fimbriae, preventing proper host cell attachment.
