Colostrum is the initial milk produced by the mammary glands of mammals immediately following parturition, serving as a vital source of nutrients and bioactive compounds for the neonate (NIH, 2023). In a therapeutic context, bovine colostrum is frequently utilized as a dietary supplement to support gut health, manage infectious diarrhea, and enhance athletic performance (Wikipedia, 2024). However, colostrum is considered a complex biological mixture rather than a discrete molecular drug target like a receptor or enzyme. Its clinical efficacy is derived from the synergistic action of its multiple components on the host's immune and epithelial systems. Notable safety concerns include potential allergic reactions in individuals with dairy sensitivities and the need for rigorous processing to prevent pathogen transmission.
Colostrum provides passive immunity through the transfer of immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM), which neutralize pathogens in the gut lumen. It also contains lactoferrin and lysozyme for direct antimicrobial activity, and growth factors such as IGF-1 and TGF-beta that promote epithelial cell proliferation and mucosal repair (PubMed, PMID: 34201059).
