Commensal and less-susceptible host-associated microorganisms refer to the vast and diverse community of non-pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and viruses that reside on or within the human body, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract. Broad-spectrum antibiotics often deplete these beneficial populations, leading to complications such as Clostridioides difficile overgrowth, whereas narrow-spectrum or microbiome-sparing drugs like fidaxomicin are designed to leave these commensals intact (Clinical Infectious Diseases, 2012). Consequently, preserving the integrity of these microorganisms is a major focus in modern therapeutic strategies to avoid secondary infections and maintain systemic homeostasis.
