Overview

Competing endogenous lncRNA 1 for miR-4707-5p and miR-4767 (CERNA1, also known as LOC100129973) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) located on chromosome 15 in humans[1][5][10]. CERNA1 functions as a molecular sponge that binds miR-4707-5p and miR-4767, thereby negatively regulating their availability in vascular endothelial cells. By sequestering these microRNAs, CERNA1 prevents them from downregulating their respective targets, the apoptosis inhibitors API5 and BCL2L12, resulting in decreased apoptosis, particularly under stress conditions such as serum and growth factor deprivation. This regulatory axis suggests a potential, but as yet not clinically validated, link to disease processes such as cardiovascular disease through its regulation of endothelial cell survival[6][7][8]. CERNA1 is not a protein, receptor, enzyme, or canonical therapeutic target but is rather a functional RNA element involved in post-transcriptional gene regulation.
