Overview

Complement C1q tumor necrosis factor-related protein 12 (C1QTNF12; also known as adipolin or CTRP12) is a secreted adipokine predominantly expressed and secreted by adipocytes. It possesses insulin-sensitizing properties and plays an important role in regulating glucose metabolism by enhancing glucose uptake in adipocytes and suppressing glucose production in hepatocytes, primarily via the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway[1][3][4][9]. C1QTNF12 is also implicated in attenuating inflammation within adipose tissue and may contribute to the overall homeostasis of glucose and lipid metabolism. Its dysfunction or altered expression has been linked to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and possibly other metabolic diseases[1][9]. No direct clinical pharmacological agents currently target C1QTNF12, but its role in insulin sensitivity suggests potential as a therapeutic target or biomarker in metabolic diseases such as diabetes mellitus[1][4][9].
