Complement component 2 (C2) is a serum glycoprotein that plays a critical role in the classical and lectin pathways of the complement system, which is an essential part of innate immunity. The protein acts as a multi-domain serine protease and provides catalytic activity for the formation of C3 and C5 convertases—key enzyme complexes that drive downstream immune responses such as opsonization, inflammation, and cell lysis. Deficiency or dysfunction of complement component ₂ impairs activation of both classical and lectin pathways, leading to increased susceptibility to infections—particularly bacterial—and may predispose individuals to autoimmune diseases due to improper clearance of immune complexes or self-tissue targeting by an unregulated system.
