Target intelligence / Profile preview
Complement component 3 (C3) is a central protein in the complement system, which is a crucial part of the innate immune response. C3 is primarily found in blood plasma and on cell surfaces, where it plays an essential role in defending against pathogens and coordinating immune responses. Upon activation by C3 convertase enzymes, C3 is cleaved into C3a and C3b, mediating inflammation and opsonization, respectively. Measurement of serum/plasma C3 levels helps diagnose/monitor autoimmune diseases, infections, and other conditions. Elevated expression is seen in some cancers.
