Overview
Complement component 5a (C5a) is a potent, 74-amino acid glycoprotein fragment generated by the enzymatic cleavage of complement component C5 during activation of the complement cascade. It is a key mediator in both innate and adaptive immunity, acting as an anaphylatoxin and chemotactic agent. Overproduction or dysregulation of C5a has been implicated in various inflammatory diseases. Inhibition of either the generation or action of C5a represents an attractive therapeutic strategy for controlling excessive inflammation.
