Overview
Complement component C4b is a major fragment generated from the cleavage of complement component 4 (C4), a central protein in the classical and lectin pathways of the complement system. Upon activation, C4 is cleaved by serine proteases into C4a and C4b. C4b becomes covalently attached to pathogen surfaces or altered self-tissue, where it plays critical roles in opsonization and convertase formation. It is not a direct drug target but plays a key role in the complement cascade.
