Overview
The complement component C5b–9 membrane attack complex is an effector structure assembled from late-stage complement proteins that inserts into target cell membranes. Its main role is immune defense through direct cytolytic activity but it also modulates inflammation via sublytic signaling. Dysregulation contributes significantly to pathology across infectious disease, autoimmunity, cancer biology and transplantation medicine.
