Complement Component C5b-9 (MAC)

Target
MAC
Molecular classification
Multi-protein complex, Complement System Component
01

Overview

Complement component C5b-9, also known as the membrane attack complex (MAC) or terminal complement complex (TCC), is a multi-protein structure formed during activation of the complement system. The MAC is assembled from complement proteins C5b, C6, C7, C8, and multiple copies of C9. Its primary function is to form transmembrane pores in target cell membranes, leading to cell lysis and death. It must be tightly regulated to avoid damage to host tissues. Dysregulation or deficiency can result in disease. Therapeutic targeting is possible.
