Complement Components C5b-9 Membrane Attack Complex (MAC)

Target
MAC
Molecular classification
Multi-protein complex
01

Overview

The complement membrane attack complex (MAC), also known as the C5b-9 complex, is a multi-protein structure formed during the terminal phase of complement activation. It is a critical effector mechanism of innate immunity, responsible for directly lysing target cells such as bacteria by forming transmembrane pores that disrupt cellular integrity. Dysregulation or excessive formation can contribute to tissue injury in autoimmune diseases.
