Overview

Complement factor H related 3 pseudogene (ENSG00000285986) is a segment of DNA in the human genome that structurally resembles the complement factor H related 3 (CFHR3) gene but is nonfunctional as a protein-coding gene. Like other pseudogenes, it contains sequence homology to the parent gene but carries mutations or alterations that prevent it from encoding a functional protein. Though traditionally thought to be “junk” DNA, some pseudogenes may exert regulatory effects on their functional homologs via noncoding RNA mechanisms, such as acting as RNA decoys for microRNAs or through antisense regulation. However, there is no evidence that this specific pseudogene acts as a protein, enzyme, receptor, or direct therapeutic target[2][6][8].

Biological functions

Possible regulation of related coding genes at the RNA level (e.g., microRNA decoy, RNA interference), but does not produce a functional protein

Disease associations

Other (There is no direct role in disease attributed to this pseudogene; however, deletion of the functional CFHR3 gene, not the pseudogene, is linked to atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome)
