Complement membrane attack complex C5b-9 (MAC)

Target
MAC
Molecular classification
Protein complex, Pore-forming complex
01

Overview

The complement membrane attack complex (MAC), also known as C5b-9, is a multi-protein complex formed on the surface of target cells. It is composed of complement proteins C5b, C6, C7, C8, and multiple copies of C9. Upon assembly, it forms a transmembrane pore, disrupting the cell membrane and leading to cell lysis. While essential for innate immunity against pathogens, its dysregulation can contribute to tissue injury in various diseases.
