The integrin alpha-M beta2 receptor (Mac-1, CR3, CD11b/CD18) is a heterodimeric integral membrane protein expressed on leukocytes involved in innate immunity. It mediates inflammation, leukocyte adhesion/migration, phagocytosis, and immune synapse formation. It recognizes a wide array of ligands including iC3b, fibrinogen, Factor X, and ICAM-1. Genetic variants in ITGAM are associated with increased risk for systemic lupus erythematosus.
