Overview

Integrin alpha M (ITGAM), also known as CD11b or Mac-1 alpha subunit, forms a heterodimer with integrin beta 2 (CD18) to create the functional receptor αMβ2 or Mac-1/CR3. This receptor is expressed on leukocytes and plays a crucial role in immune responses by mediating cell adhesion, migration, phagocytosis, and complement activation. It binds to ligands such as iC3b, fibrinogen, Factor X, and ICAM-1. Genetic variants in ITGAM are associated with autoimmune diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus. It's commonly used as a marker for myeloid lineage cells in immunohistochemistry.
