Complement receptor type 2 (CR2), also known as CD21, is a membrane glycoprotein that plays a pivotal role in the immune system by linking innate and adaptive immunity. It is expressed primarily on mature B cells and follicular dendritic cells, and functions as a receptor for complement fragments (iC3b, C3dg, C3d) and the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). CR2 enhances B cell activation and antibody responses, and serves as an entry point for EBV into B lymphocytes. Variations in CR2 expression are associated with autoimmune diseases like SLE.
