Overview

A component of a deep eutectic solvent (DES) refers to an individual chemical species, typically a hydrogen bond donor (HBD) or a hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA), that participates in the formation of a eutectic mixture with a melting point significantly lower than its pure constituents. In pharmaceutical science, these components are utilized to create 'therapeutic deep eutectic solvents' (THEDES), where an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) is incorporated as one of the eutectic members. The primary role of these components is to modify the physicochemical properties of a drug, enhancing its solubility, stability, and permeability across biological membranes. Common examples include choline chloride, urea, glycerol, and various organic acids or polyols. While these substances are critical for advanced drug delivery systems, they function as chemical excipients or formulation vehicles rather than biological therapeutic targets like receptors or enzymes. Consequently, the term describes a chemical role within a solvent system and is not considered a valid therapeutic target in drug discovery.
